Puerto Rico Luxury’s Neighborhood Guide: Condado & Ocean Park

Condado:

History:

1876 – Pablo Ubarri, an engineer from the port town of Santurtzi in Spain’s autonomous Basque Country region arrived on the island to help in the construction of a railroad system and a steam tramway between San Juan and the town of Río Piedras through the center of “Cangrejos” which prompted the gentrification of the district. Many years after his arrival he was granted the title of Count of Santurce (which is the Hispanicized equivalent of Santurtzi) by the Spanish Crown. With his newly acquired title and influence, the Santurce District was renamed after his Ubarri.

Condado also received its present-name from Ubarri’s title, as the district’s name literally translates to “county”, which in medieval tradition is land granted by a monarch to a count.

1908 – A semi private property in Santurce, located north and east of the lagoon protected by the San Jerónimo Fort remained undeveloped. It was in 1908 when Hernand and Sosthenes Behn, the founders of the Puerto Rico Telephone Co., decided to urbanize the farm inherited from their wealthy stepfather, a man named Sosthenes Luchetti. During this process, the Behn brothers built a new road and a bridge linking this sector with the islet of San Juan (now Old San Juan). The bridge was named Puente Dos Hermanos (Two Brother’s Bridge).

20th Century – The neighborhood experienced an economic boom in the first decades of the 20th century when some of the wealthiest families built their homes in the area. The Vanderbilt’s built a summer home in 1919 which today has been converted into the luxurious Condado Vanderbilt Hotel.

A convention center was built to host activities while many families began to move in during the development of high-end and high-rise apartment buildings. In fact, the main road, Ashford Avenue was named after another well-known Condado resident, Dr. Bailey Ashford, an American physician who had a military career in the United States Army and afterward taught full-time at the School of Tropical Medicine, which he helped establish in San Juan.

The 21st Century-today – Condado is currently undergoing a renaissance with the development of luxury properties, upscale shopping and four star restaurants.
